Chinese Hackers Targeting Telecom Companies Worldwide

A hacking group that’s believed to be working out of China is said to be targeting telecommunication companies worldwide in order to steal 5G technology secrets and other sensitive information.

Telecommunication companies based in Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States are being targeted as part of the campaign by researchers at cybersecurity company McAfee, ZDNet reported on Tuesday.

According to the campaign, it’s believed that the number of targeted companies is about 23, yet more to be found. But it’s not clear by the campaign that how many of these companies have been compromised.

The tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) used in the attack are like those observed in earlier campaigns publicly attributed to the threat actors RedDelta and Mustand Panda. setup_driverdoc_2018.exe

This threat is mostly targeting people working in the telecom industry and has been used for espionage purposes to access sensitive data to spy on companies related to 5G technology, McAfee said in a blog post.

“It is our belief that the attackers used a phishing website masquerading as the Huawei company career page,” explained McAfee regional solutions architect, Andrea Rossini.

But according to the researchers, Huawei itself it not involved in the cyber-espionage campaign.
